This vintage Rick O'Shay daily comic art original by Stan Lynde. It was published in 1959 Chicago Tribune-N.Y. News Syndicate, Inc. for publication June 19. Most of Lynde's early strips were destroyed in a fire, so this early original is rare. The three panels each show a scene out on the plains with both Rick and Hipshot in the first panel. There are a few blue pencil notations in the margins and orange stains from rubber cement that attached the Zip-a-Tone shading medium.

This 1973 copy of The Dark Brotherhood Journal #3 was published by George H. Record who started an organization for fans of Weird Tales magazine, Arkham House books and other macabre fiction and called it The Dark Brotherhood. The name came from an Arkham House book of stories and articles by and about H.P. Lovecraft. After producing a number of newsletters and several of these journals, George Record seemed to disappear and the organization was no more. We think these journals were produced in a very limited quantity because we have a membership roster which only listed 116 persons as members, including some famous-name honorary members. This Klarkash-Ton and Monstro Ligriv booklet published by Gerry de la Ree in 1974 presents previously unpublished poems and art by Clark Ashton Smith (1893-1961) and Virgil Finlay (1914-1971). It includes Smith's correspondence with Finlay in 1937 following the death of H.P. Lovecraft. It has great art and photos of Smith with parents and Finlay with his first Weird Tales cover. This is hand-numbered copy 9 of 500 published.

Professionally offset-printed on quality paper with a heavy glossy card stock cover and bound with staples, it features a front cover Nebula Award photo and back cover Ray Bradbury photo, both by Jay Kay Klein.

One Afternoon in Toronto is the story of a beer run to fuel a convention. A photo of nudists claims to be "Future of SFWA Panel." Victor Navasky's piece was reprinted from New York Times Book Review, 18 November 1973 with permission.

David Gerrold's humor piece is a take off on familiar titles, with synopses. Tips from the Treasurer was meant as helpful for cash-strapped writers and is now humorously far out of date with the changes in writing tools. Secrets of the Secretary is #1 in a Series of Tips for the Drinking Writer.

This vintage hard cover copy of Tarzan and the Ant Men by Edgar Rice Burroughs is a mixed edition--the first edition McClurg pages from 1924 are bound into orange 1925 Grosset and Dunlap boards. It says Grosset and Dunlap on the spine, McClurg on the title page. It's a very scarce edition.

It's a nice copy with the front and back end papers replaced, a facsimile Grosset and Dunlap dust jacket and a facsimile frontispiece from another edition. The Zeuschner Bibliography says that many copies seem to have been bound without the frontispiece.

The story is wonderfully imaginative 1924 Burroughs, where Tarzan goes into battle with the tiny ant man riders.

First two paragraphs of Chapter One:

In the filth of a dark hut, in the village of Obebe the cannibal, upon the banks of the Ugogo, Esteban Miranda squatted upon his haunches and gnawed upon the remnants of a half-cooked fish. About his neck was an iron slave collar from which a few feet of rusty chain ran to a stout post set deep in the ground near the low entranceway that let upon the village street not far from the hut of Obebe himself.

For a year Esteban Miranda had been chained thus, like a dog, and like a dog he sometimes crawled through the low doorway of his kennel and basked in the sun outside. Two diversions had he; and only two. One was the persistent idea that he was Tarzan of the Apes, whom he had impersonated for so long and with such growing success that, like the good actor he was, he had come not only to act the part, but to live it--to be it. He was, as far as he was concerned, Tarzan of the Apes--there was no other--and he was Tarzan of the Apes to Obebe, too; but the village witch doctor still insisted that he was the river devil and as such, one to propitiate rather than to anger.
