    • Ask Taubes

    • Book Review
These issues show some gorgeous art. The Art Competitions show art by students--a splendid variety with a high level of skill. Art Talent Available showcases the art of accomplished students seeking work. Trumpets for Teachers share favorite stories from art teachers on their experiences.

Sample Q and A from Taubes:
Q. Not long ago I listened to a lecture by a well known art critic who drew a parallel between the French painter David and Mondrian, without elaborating on it. Could you do it for me?
A. The only parallel I can think of is that the first was a good neo-classicistic hack and the second an inept tile setter. And what of the art critic? As usual, when looking at pictures he keeps his eyes tightly closed, while dreaming up some horrendous abracadabra.

Springfield THERMOMETER BAROMETER in Rowboat, Orig Box!

Springfield THERMOMETER BAROMETER in Rowboat, Orig Box! - eBay (item 310097020753 end time Nov-06-08 20:08:48 PST)

This wooden boat with marine-style round thermometer and barometer is still in the original box and shrink wrap. The box is marked, "Springfield Precision Instruments Decorative Weather Center. The natural choice."

It's marked, "©2000 Springfield Precision Instrument, Inc. Wood made in China. Instruments made in USA. Assembled in U.S.A."

The sticker on the bottom front says, "Weather instruments are designed to rotate for realignment and may shift during shipment, simply adjust to your preference." Both instruments are sideways at the moment.

The boat is secured to the box back with two screws and washers. Somehow that didn't prevent a crack in the face of the barometer, shown in the fourth photo, and a close-up in the last photo. The sides of the boat are white with hunter green trim.

Vintage METAL KALEIDOSCOPE Possibly Brass, Very Old Toy

Vintage METAL KALEIDOSCOPE Possibly Brass, Very Old Toy - eBay (item 310095311291 end time Oct-31-08 18:52:00 PDT)

This vintage metal kaleidoscope is possibly brass and still works great. It has what looks like colorful stone or ceramic chips inside to make the designs. I see no maker's mark.

The metal has some missing finish and numerous fingerprints and other marks. The patterns tend to look dark, either from faded design elements or cloudy glass. It seems very old.
