Vintage WOODEN WOMAN NUTCRACKER 13-In Native in Skirt!

Vintage WOODEN WOMAN NUTCRACKER 13-In Native in Skirt! - eBay (item 310063516531 end time Jul-05-08 19:50:48 PDT)

This vintage nutcracker is a naked woman made of wood. Her left leg opens to the side and there are hollows to accept nuts for cracking when her legs are closed.

I see no maker's mark anywhere. She's a good size at 13 1/2 inches and seems strong. She could be a South Seas native girl dressed in just a little skirt.

Vintage SESSIONS 8 DAY ALARM CLOCK Metal Wind-Up As-Is!

Vintage SESSIONS 8 DAY ALARM CLOCK Metal Wind-Up As-Is! - eBay (item 310063500852 end time Jul-05-08 18:35:06 PDT)

This vintage wind-up clock is marked, "Sessions 8 Day Alarm, Made in U.S.A." The base is marked, "Design Patent No. 75078."

It's striking-looking with a silver-color metal case set on a fluted pedestle, but I fear it's a fixer-upper. The back has a wind-up key for the time and one for the alarm. There's a knob to set the alarm and one to set the time. There's a slot where you adjust the clock speed.

I wound it up and it ticks and the minute hand seems to run fine, but the hour hand stays between the 4 and 5. I can't set the alarm time. When you pull the top button up, the alarm rings. There are scratches around the four nuts, suggesting the clock has been taken apart and tinkered with.

Vintage EUREKA NO. 1 6SB CAR JACK Cast Iron Screw Type!

Vintage EUREKA NO. 1 6SB CAR JACK Cast Iron Screw Type! - eBay (item 310063253143 end time Jul-04-08 20:21:16 PDT)

This vintage cast iron car jack is marked, "Eureka No. 1 SB" on the body front and "K" on the body back. The handle is marked, "6SB Ashland O" and "Ashland Mfg Co."

I wouldn't trust this old jack any further than I can throw it. Maybe it was meant for a lightweight car like an old Model T as it doesn't lift very high--from 9 1/2" to 15 1/2". Yes, it works, but I can imagine slippage between the gears is possible, even likely under a heavy load.

I didn't clean it up much, just rubbed off some of the rusty crust. A good oiling and rub and scrub might make a wonderful difference so you can display this old car tool with pride.

2 Strings of BRASS BELLS From India, 4 Sarna, 4 Small!

2 Strings of BRASS BELLS From India, 4 Sarna, 4 Small! - eBay (item 310063231383 end time Jul-04-08 18:39:23 PDT)

These two strings of bells came from India. The four different-size bells are carved and marked in order from large to small, "Bells of Sarna, India 157 - 3; Reg. U.S. 157 - 2; SS Sarna Inc. India; Giod Pul (I think)." The four same-size bells have a simpler design of lines around them and are marked on the outside, "India."

The different-size bells make a lovely series of tones, deep to high. The same-size bells all make a nice bright tinkle. Surely you can come up with far more decorative strings, cords or leather lacing to enhance their beauty.

Vintage BLADE RUNNER PORTFOLIO 12 Movie Photos, Folder! - eBay (item 310062762150 end time Jul-02-08 19:58:05 PDT)

This vintage Blade Runner Portfolio is marked, "Harrison Ford is... Blade Runner. The Motion Picture Portfolio. Twelve Dazzling Full-Color Moments From the Blockbuster Film!" It was produced in 1982 by The Ladd Company.

The film starred Harrison Ford, Sean Young, Rutger Hauer, Daryl Hannah and was directed by Ridley Scott.

The back cover shows thumbnail versions of the photos inside. Remember Rachael, Deckard, Pris, Roy Batty, Leon and Gaff? They're all here in the form of twelve 9x12" photos loose in a stiff folder.

It was opened when we first got it, but has lived in a plastic bag ever since.

1970 SHRINER SYRIA MOSQUE Decorative Plate, Pittsburgh!

1970 SHRINER SYRIA MOSQUE Decorative Plate, Pittsburgh! - eBay (item 310062746309 end time Jul-02-08 18:25:57 PDT)

This decorative plate shows an artist's rendering of the Syria Mosque, a Pittsburgh, PA landmark that has been torn down for years now. The plate has a Shiners emblem and is dedicated to "James P. Houggey, Potentate - 1970." The artist signature says, "Betty. L. Heiges, '69."

I'm not sure if this china plat is for hanging on a wall or for holding snacks. The wear on the gilt edge suggests it was used for something instead of just admired.

Big Little Book Type ORIGINAL ART 143 Panels, Wehrle!

Big Little Book Type ORIGINAL ART 143 Panels, Wehrle! - eBay (item 310062236533 end time Jun-30-08 21:12:55 PDT)

These panels are all the interior art for the 1981 self-published book Cauliflower Catnip by Joe Wehrle, Jr. The book was made like an old-time Big Little Book, printed on pulpy paper with a cartoon page for every page of text. The book received nice reviews by Cat Yronwode in "Comics Buyers Guide" and by Dale Luciano in "The Comics Journal."

One panel with a lot of old cars has been pasted up from photocopies to fit the space and the author's portrait is mostly a photocopy. Otherwise all the drawings are original inked pages with blue pencil showing how they were roughed in, and some white retouching added. There are 143 panels, including the title page.

The actual bound book shown in the first photo is not included in the sale of these panels, but we will include one of the printed color covers. The first photo also shows how one of the panels looked when printed on the pulpy paper with caption.

If you're a Big Little Book collector, you know this may be your only chance to get your hands on the complete original art for one!

Vintage U.S. SERVICE WRITING KIT Navy Stationery Folder

Vintage U.S. SERVICE WRITING KIT Navy Stationery Folder - eBay (item 310062212529 end time Jun-30-08 18:56:06 PDT)

This U.S. Service Writing Kit is a navy blue faux leather paper folder with a silver embossed logo and "U.S. Service Writing Kit" on the front cover. Inside on the left is a pocket full of 24 envelopes, a place to put your sweetheart's photo and a card to record your name, number, outfit, company, camp and location. On the right are two pads of stationery imprinted with a navy blue USN anchor logo.

There are 24 envelopes and two pads of stationery. There's only one sheet left on the pad inserted in the folder, plus a full pad ready for use. The envelopes and stationery are age-darkened and have light foxing spots. We believe it's a World War II era kit.

The pasteboard box/envelope is printed on the front in red with images of three servicemen, a mailing envelope, stars and a banner that says, "U.S. Service Writing Kit." Both narrow sides say, "Keep Writing 'Em." On one end there's a printed "N" and someone hand-wrote in pencil to make it say,"Navy Blue 50 cents."

Vintage GRISWOLD LID 2958 Cast Iron Cookware, Erie PA! - eBay (item 310061685119 end time Jun-28-08 20:23:23 PDT)

This old Griswold cast iron lid is marked, "Griswold, Erie, PA. Pat. 1,554,360. 2598." It perfectly fits a number 8 Griswold skillet which is 10" across and has two pouring lips.

The white stuff turns out to be grease and will scratch off with a fingernail, so this lid just needs a good cleaning to go back into service.

E.R. Burroughs TARZAN JEWELS OF OPAR McClurg, Facs DJ! - eBay (item 310061360778 end time Jun-27-08 18:28:11 PDT)

This A.C. McClurg first edition, first state 1918 hard cover copy of Tarzan and the Jewels of Opar by Edgar Rice Burroughs comes with a facsimile DJ. All eight J. Allen St. John illustrations are in this edition.

Editor Robert H. Davis gives this summary: "The ape man goes back after more of the forgotten ingots in the treasure vaults of the ancient city of Opar and discovers a room full of jewels after being injured during an earthquake and losing his memory. A Belgian murderer and an Arab raider join forces to abduct Lady Greystoke and ruin Tarzan. Basuli is there, and Mugambi, with other old friends of the family. Cadj, the high priest of Opar, probably the coarsest hidden city diplomat that ever reigned, because of his jealously of Tarzan, spills all the beans that one man can spill in one volume. Tarzan triumphs."

Antique BF Goodrich TIRE INFLATION GAUGE Caliper Scale!

Antique BF Goodrich TIRE INFLATION GAUGE Caliper Scale! - eBay (item 310061358966 end time Jun-27-08 18:20:14 PDT)

This antique tool was used to measure tire inflation before there was a way to measure pounds per square inch air pressure. It's marked, "Goodrich Inflation Gauge, B.F. Goodrich, Akron Ohio."

The instructions include two diagrams showing the gauge measuring a tire's narrow width at the top where it's off the ground, and fatter width on the ground. There's patina obscuring some words but I think it says:
To determine proper inflation under present load, fit caliper to tire. Refer to "Size Scale." Transfer slide to correct loading letter on "Load Scale." Place caliper at width of deflection on ground and inflate or deflate as case demands.
The Size Scale of Tire scale runs from A to N. The Scale on Ground scale runs from A to L. I can't get the sliding part to slide, either because there's a trick I don't know or because there's patina holding it fast. There's a shinier place to the right which indicates it was covered and protected from patina, proof the slider did slide before. The legs unfold easily enough.

Original PENCIL DRAWING for Arkham House Prince Zaleski - eBay (item 310060669294 end time Jun-24-08 20:01:57 PDT)

This original pencil drawing by Joe Wehrle, Jr. is a version of the art used for the cover of the Arkham House book Prince Zaleski and Cummings King Monk by M.P. Shiel, published in 1977.

Strangely enough, the artist posed for both characters on the cover, changing clothes and the way he combed his hair to make them starkly different. We are enclosing copies of the model photos with this original pencil drawing.

The pencil drawing is only initialed, but the artist is willing to add a complete inked signature either on the front or the back of the drawing, whatever you choose.

Vintage MILITARY CARGO PANTS 34/32 Made in W. Germany!

Vintage MILITARY CARGO PANTS 34/32 Made in W. Germany! - eBay (item 310060646623 end time Jun-24-08 18:31:34 PDT)

This pair of military pants with cargo pockets has two labels inside: a cotton one sewed to the front pocket says, "K. Begemann." The satiny one says, "Made in W. Germany. 85% Wool 15% Polyester" and shows care symbols for Do not wash, Do not bleach, Iron, and one with a P in a circle (dry clean in Perc?).

I know these are old because West Germany dissolved in the early nineties. I don't know if they were for an American or German soldier or what. Do you know? Clue me in, please.

They're well-made with a button fly, button-down pocket flaps, snaps in the leg hems. The waist has tabs and buttons so you can make the pants up to four inches tighter. Are the tabs and buttons inside the waistband for the same purpose? There are snaps in the leg hems to cinch them smaller.

The color is a tan/green/rust blend that's not as dark as the dark photos or as light as the light photos. Some of the buttons are brown, others green. None missing!

I made no attempt to get them drycleaned, so I don't know if the stains will come out. I didn't resew the seat seam or repair the three three-corner tears, but they'd be easy for any tailor. I should know. I am one. I left them alone in case you'd want the tears rewoven for complete invisibility.

Antique F.E. MYERS & BRO HAND PUMP 648, Pat. 1895, Air! - eBay (item 310060116478 end time Jun-22-08 20:02:03 PDT)

This antique hand pump is marked, "F.E. Myers & Bro, Ashland, O." There's a "648" and "1850" on it, and "Patent Mar. 19, '95, something illegible, Nov. 9, '95." We're guessing it's an old air pump. If you know better, please let us know.

It has a metal foot rest and cut-out fancy work on the metal brace and handle. I've shown photos of the pump handle raised and down. The old rubber hose is so brittle pieces of rubber are falling off the inner fabric.

Do you think there was a needle valve in the end of the hose for pumping up old-time footballs? It's a fabulous piece of history and might look just great cleaned up a bit or restored to service. I forgot to photograph the patent numbers at the base.

The box still has the hang tag that attached it to the neck of the whiskey bottle. The graphics on the box looks like football pigskin so these were meant for use at football games. They're a unique Jim Beam advertising item.

White China Bowl w/ Gorgeous Pink SCULPTURED ROSES Lid!

White China Bowl w/ Gorgeous Pink SCULPTURED ROSES Lid! - eBay (item 310056564479 end time Jun-09-08 18:20:35 PDT)

This white china bowl has beautiful hand-sculpted roses and leaves applied to the lid. The flowers are very well done, so it's surprising there's no maker's mark anywhere.

This bowl isn't something Miles brought, but one I've had for awhile, given to me as a gift from one of my tailoring customers. I'm not usually into such girly things, but it was too pretty not to keep and love. I kept almonds in it ready to eat by the handful. You lift the lid by sticking your fingertips amidst the flowers for a grip.

I'm ready to pass it along to someone else to love. Why? Because I'm amazed I haven't broken it! And I don't want to be the one to smash it. It's not perfect, but still very lovable. Maybe you could love it and pass it down to your heirs? Maybe you have a china cabinet to keep it safe. I don't.

Fair warning--it's not the easiest thing to clean in and around all those rose petals and leaves. The inner rim in the bowl and the rim in the lid are unglazed, perhaps so the lid doesn't slip around.

This heavy cast iron powder scale for reloading ammo is marked, "Herter's Inc., Since 1893, Waseca, Minn. Pat. Pend. Technical Ballistic Laboratory, Model 5."

I apologize for the pictures having the weight scale bar in the wrong position. It's correct now, with the one end UNDER the wire instead of over it. Looks much better now in real life, not so much in the pictures.

The thick loop of wire on one end looks home-made to me, meant to hold a cup that isn't here. This scale has four bolts with rubber feet for adjusting the level. It weighs about 6 1/2 pounds so shipping will be a factor.

This vintage machinist's tool kit is a Lufkin Dial Test Indicator, No. 399A or No. 299A. It was produced by The Lufkin Rule Col, Saginaw, Michigan, U.S.A. The wooden box is embossed in gold, "Lufkin" on the lid and has a neat metal latch closure.

The instruction label says,
This Indicator is a precision and sensitive tool and should be treated with the same care as a fine watch.

To Use Hold Attachment

Unscrew cap on end of Indicator Base and screw hole attachment part way in. Then, lift moveable end up towards dial face and in a straight line with the base; continue to screw an attachment until it seals tight on base. This is done to guide the inside end of attachment into the hole in spindle of indicator. Replace cap after using attachment.
There might be a couple small bits missing from little holes, but most of the slots are filled. The dial says, "Lufkin. made in U.S.A. No. 399, 0-50-0, Jeweled .001"."

These vintage cast aluminum block ice tongs are marked on two legs, "542--16 1/2 IN". Another leg is marked, "Gifford Wood Co., Hudson, N.Y." They were used back in the days when the iceman brought you ice for your icebox.

Opened to the max, the gripper fingers are 17" apart. I can't imagine how heavy a block of ice that size might weigh. Oof.

The silver embroidery is so thick and heavy it stands a half inch above the fabric surface. The back is lined in red cotton/polyester fabric. The semi-vest has three chain links like a closure at the front. It doesn't open and close, but has a small hook on top. There's a red jewel in the center of each large embroidered star.
