This vintage Empire hair straightener iron is marked, "Empire Products, Inc., Cincinnati, Ohio, Patent 1889432 Made in U.S.A."
Depress the thumb lever and it opens just wide enough to accept a lock of hair (see photo). The cord is 58 inches long. The handle and thumb knob are black wood. There's a seemingly permanent thumbprint on one blade.

Sorry to inform you that this is NOT a hair straightener! I thought so too when we first unearthed one exactly like it while sorting through a bachelor Uncle's belonging just this weekend - His was in the original box along with the paperwork - It is an electric hand presser to use while you are still wearing your pants to get a good crease or to freshen up your suit lapels or ties! Also renews pleats without any moisture. I think this is one of those rare busts of an idea! HAHA But certainly entertaining!
