Vintage IMMEC 22-P FISHING REEL Deep Sea Big Game, Line - eBay (item 310011849938 end time Jan-07-08 20:35:24 PST)Do you like old deep sea fishing reels?
This vintage Immec 22-P fishing reel is marked on the base, "Made in Japan 2902." It looks rather complicated with a button on one side, a lever and that star shape on the other. It has heavy line on it for deep sea fishing.
The dark finish is very nice, no scratches or scrapes. There's minor wear on the metal finish on the crank and the lever.
The long lever controls whether the line feeds or not. The crank clicks when you run it one way and locks when you try to turn it the other way. I don't see what the button on the left controls, but I bet you do.

Vintage 1982 E.T. LUNCH BOX, THERMOS Metal Tin Litho ET - (eBay item 310011239835 end time Jan-04-08 20:25:52 PST)Do you like vintage lunch boxes?
This old tin litho lunch box and thermos feature colorful art drawings of scenes and characters from the 1982 movie E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. The lid says, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial ©1982 Universal City Studios, Inc. All Rights Reserved. A trademark of and licensed by Universal City Studios, Inc. Aladdin Industries Incorporated, Nashville, Tenn. 37210 USA." Similar markings appear on the thermos which holds about eight ounces--"Keeps Hot...Keeps Cold."
Under the yellow plastic handle is an image of E.T. trying to phone home. One side shows E.T. and the three children focused on floating balls that represent the solar system. The bottom panel has Gertie (young Drew Barrymore) kissing E.T. good-bye. The other side shows her with E.T. posing as one of her stuffed animals. One large panel shows the kids and E.T. on bikes flying over police cars. The other large panel shows E.T. healing Elliot's hurt finger.
Can you believe this movie came out 25 years ago? To refresh your memory on the story, characters and creators, visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/E.T._the_Extra-Terrestrial
From Wikipedia:E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial is a 1982 science fiction film co-produced and directed by Steven Spielberg, written by Melissa Mathison and starring Henry Thomas, Robert MacNaughton, Drew Barrymore, Dee Wallace and Peter Coyote. It tells the story of Elliott (played by Thomas), a lonely boy who befriends a friendly alien, dubbed E.T., who is stranded on Earth. Elliott and his siblings help the alien return home while attempting to keep it hidden from their mother and the government.
The lunch box has wear on the edges, patina on the handle clips and latch, minor dings, and some light rust where the lid and box scrape each other. The thermos looks great.

Vintage JAPANESE ABACUS Soroban Adding Machine in Box! - (eBay item 310011028013 end time Jan-03-08 20:25:22 PST)Do you like vintage calculators?
This abacus has thirteen rods with five blond wood beads on one side and two beads on the other. They're framed in a black wooden box that's still in the original pasteboard box. The box is marked, "TFW-608 Japan" and a label on the abacus back is marked, "Four Winds, Japan" with a robed male figure.
This Japanese abacus or counting frame is also called a soroban. Believe it or not this device can be used to do functions other than counting. "Unlike the simple counting board used in elementary schools, very efficient suanpan techniques have been developed to do multiplication, division, addition, subtraction, square root and cube root operations at high speed," says Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abacus
People still use abacuses even with modern day calculators widely available. An article on how to use a Japanese abacus is here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soroban

Vintage TANGA BELLS Metal Carriage Music, Sarna, India! - (eBay item 310009832604 end time Dec-29-07 18:15:00 PST)Do you like bells?
These vintage Tanga Bells are 12 different sizes and shapes strung on a cord. The look like brass. The label says:TANGA BELLS
A tanga is a one horse carriage with two wheels. It usually carries three passengers and a driver. When carrying ladies from one place to another or to a temple gathering, they pull the curtains down from all sides, so that the passers-by cannot see the ladies.
Tanga taxi is a general way of passenger conveyance through-out India. They are licensed by the local municipality.
Fancy coachmen decorate their horse's necks with various types of bells which give sweet and melodious tones to far off distances. These bells also serve as a warning to pedestrians to make way for the coming Tanga. Rich men take great pride to own their own highly decorative and fancy Tangas.
One of the Collector "Bells of Sarna"

Vintage SPUTNIK CIGAR BREATHER Keeps Cigar Lit Ashtray? - (eBay item 310009657245 end time Dec-27-07 21:35:05 PST)Do you like old smoking gear?
This vintage device is very heavy silvery metal with no maker's mark, only a small target design on the center bottom. Maybe it's an ashtray, but it looks like a sputnik and has four holes leading from the cup down through the four hollow legs.
There are two hollow tubes jutting out three sides of the bottom. The fourth side has two holes--one hollow and one seems plugged with rubber. I don't know if it's supposed to be that way or what.
The one inch long tube is where I'm supposing you place your lit cigar to keep it from going out. Perhaps the handle or bracket at the top is for tapping off your ashes.
The surface has numerous marks all over it like it's been banged around a good bit. It's small, only 3 1/2 inches high and feels like it weighs a ton, but it's 2 lbs. 1.3 oz.
Does this vintage cigar breather or whatever it is make you smile?

Antique NO. 2A TARGET HAWK-EYE Box Camera Eastman Kodak - (eBay item 310009446632 end time Dec-26-07 21:03:27 PST)
Do you like old cameras?
This camera is marked on the film cartridge, "No. 2A Target Hawk-Eye, Made in U.S.A. by Eastman Kodak Company, Rochester, N.Y., Patented in U.S.A. 1,169,882, 1,176,329, 1,494,719, Pat. Pending. Printed in U.S.A. No. 45547."
It also says, "Use Kodak Film V116 or 116. Use Kodak Film in the Yellow Box. It gets the picture." Another label suggest you give your film to a master photo dealer for expert photo finishing.
The camera is covered in black paper textured like leather and has two view finders for portrait and landscape photos. The film advance crank is marked, "Use Kodak Film 116."
To disassemble, pull out the film advance crank, lift the screw at the front end of the leather strap, grasp the camera front at each side and pull forward. The shutter lever still works and two sliding tabs control other settings. The spool in the film cartridge is wooden.
I can't see through the landscape viewer at all. There's dirt in the portrait viewer, but light gets through. One film reel guide is bent.

Vintage THE CHICAGO Old Cast Iron Tool Riveter? Emboss? - (eBay item 310009420712 end time Dec-26-07 17:25:04 PST)Do you like old cast iron tools?
This vintage cast iron tool is a mystery to me. Is it a snap setter or riveter or what? It's marked, "The Chicago, Pat Apld For." The other side says, "7." Not too informative. Is it an embosser with the seals missing?
Why does it have a part that looks like an anvil? That makes me think it might be a shoemaker's tool for installing eyelets. The handle moves completely out of the way, perhaps for hammering the eyelets down good and tight on the anvil end.
There's not much of the original shiny black finish left. The handle moves easily and compresses the two cylindrical parts together.

Vintage HORROCKS-IBBOTSON Cork Handle Collapsible Rod! - (eBay item 310009257504 end time Dec-25-07 20:05:37 PST)Do you like old fishing rods?
This vintage Horrocks-Ibbotson cork handle collapsible fishing rod is marked, "No. 1916 Horrocks-Ibbotson Co., Utica, New York, Made in U.S.A."
The reel has line in it that's tied in a loop through the line guides as if to keep the rod from telescoping out before the next fishing trip. I show the rod expanded as far as it will while still tied.
The telescoping works easily. One end of the reel handle rubs the reel. The cork handles were very dirty and have been gently scraped clean.

Vintage BAYUK PHILADELPHIA PERFECTO Tin Litho Cigar Box - (eBay item 310009234282 end time Dec-25-07 17:01:13 PST)Do you like old cigar boxes?
This vintage metal cigar box says, "Bayuk Philadelphia Perfecto Hand Made" on the lid. The lithographic designs on the sides and bottom repeat those words in red, black and gold borders and wood-grain centers.
Inside, the lid says, "Bayuk Philadelphia Hand Made Perfecto, 10 Cent--It's Ripe Tobacco! Manufactured by Bayuk Cigars Inc., Philadelphia, Pa. copyright Bayuk Cigars Incorporated, 1925."
The fine print on the box front says, "The cigars herein contained were manufactured to retail at more than eight cents each and not more than fifteen cents each and are so tax paid."
There's a liner in the bottom of very stiff paper or light cardboard covering the rusted tin bottom of the cigar box. The bottom has a small hole drilled in each corner that look like they were made by the manufacturer. Not shown in the photos is a hooked arm on the left to lock the lid in an upright position through a slot in the lid edge.
There are many scrapes all over and some stains on the lid, not surprising in a tin box this old. The bottom has much wear and rust. The lid has a few minor dents, good hinges and closes easily when you push in the front a bit.
Do the vintage graphics on this tin cigar box make you smile?

There's a half inch minor scratch in the green (Polarized?) covering on the left lens at the center top. The right lens has several smaller scratches in the middle. I didn't see them until I took a close look for condition.

1920s BISQUE DOLL IN PAPER DRESS Scant 7 In Arms Move! - (eBay item 310005405234 end time Dec-12-07 19:42:29 PST)
This vintage bisque doll is four inches tall from head to foot but stands almost seven inches tall because of her long, stiff gathered paper skirt or dress. She has very pale blonde painted hair with a painted blue bow, light brown brows, dark eyes and a dot of red on her mouth. Her upper back is marked, "Made in Japan."
Her movable arms are attached with wire. Her legs with socks and black painted shoes also move. She's none too clean, but I made no attempt to clean her, afraid of damaging her or her paper skirt.
Her skirt might be crepe paper and might have been green originally. It's been gathered with thread in two tiers and has four tiny pink paper flowers. It's stiff enough for her to stand upright even though her feet are far from the skirt bottom. The skirt/dress has two tiny straps which are also age-darkened.
We think this doll is probably from the 1920s as she came to us with another bisque doll that is definitely from the twenties.

1920s BISQUE DOLL 7-Inch Bare Bottom Cutie in Knit Top! - (eBay item 310004737747 end time Dec-11-07 18:30:00 PST) This vintage bisque doll is seven inches tall, blonde, wearing a slinky knit top and nothing else. She still has her arms. Her upper back is marked, "Made in Japan."
Her face is painted in a twenties style with the thin brows, big eyes with lashes painted top and bottom, a tiny bow mouth and her hair is bobbed. She's none too clean. I used a damp cloth on her and it did almost nothing. Perhaps you know how to give her a proper bath.
Her silky little pink knit top has a hole at the bottom front, a smaller hole on her right side and some irregularities at the back.
There's a flaw in the bisque at her ankle and a tiny hole in the bottom of her feet. She has no cracks, crazing or chips and her arms are held in place with a rubber band, I think. They move easily and stay put.

BLACK MANSERVANT CAST IRON BANK Still Top Hat Old Man! - (eBay item 310005035606 end time Dec-11-07 18:11:43 PST) This vintage cast iron bank is a five-inch tall balding black manservant dressed in very old-fashioned red coat, white high-collar shirt, yellow pants, yellow tie, and black shoes. He's a still bank missing a significant amount of finish. The screw holding the front and back halves together has a slot head. I tried to open it in search of a maker's mark, but it didn't budge and I didn't want to force it.
There's no money in it now. The slot is a scant inch wide and won't accept a quarter. Was this bank made before quarters were common change in a kid's pocket?

Vintage 12 K GOLD EYE GLASSES Engraved Wire Frame, Case - (eBay item 310004344028 end time Dec-09-07 19:16:03 PST) This pair of gold eye glasses feature bifocal lenses and flexible wire temples that wrap around your ears. Engraved on the inside of the temples are the words, "1/10 12 K G.F." There's a small symbol also, but I couldn't make it out. They come in a hard leather case.
The lens width is 45 mm, the lens height is 41 mm, the temples measure 117 mm from the lens to the middle back of the ear piece. The lenses are 24 mm apart and the nose pads are 18 mm apart.
There's a design carved into the temples and the bridge is a plain narrow bar. There's no frame around the lower part of the lenses. Screws through holes in the lenses attach the nose pads and the frame. These glasses are almost weightless.
The coolest thing about this style of eye glass temples is the way the glasses stay on your head even if you turn upside-down. If you're sick of your spectacles falling off, these are for you.

Vintage Brass SIMPLEX ALCOHOL BURNER TORCH Solder Tool! - (eBay item 310003774543 end time Dec-07-07 19:22:43 PST) This lamp, blow torch or soldering torch is all brass and marked, "Simplex, Pat. Pend., Eerblow Mfg. Co., Leetsdale, PA."
I know nothing about this device. There are two knobs that need a pair of pliers to adjust, judging by the scars on the brass around them and the fact that they don't budge with fingers turning them. That might be a cap on top for filling the thing, but it doesn't budge either.
Another eBayer called one similar to this an antique alcohol burning soldering torch. Besides the scratches around the knobs, there's a dent on the bottom edge and some discoloring on the brass. It feels solid, nothing loose outside. It makes a tiny jingle you can barely hear inside when you shake it.

Vintage Navy WWII U.S. SERVICE WRITING KIT in Orig Box! - (eBay item 310003746161 end time Dec-07-07 18:15:00 PST) This U.S. Service Writing Kit is a navy blue faux leather paper folder with a silver embossed logo on the front cover. Inside on the left is a pocket full of envelopes with a place to put your sweetheart's photo and your name, number, outfit, company, camp and location. On the right is a pad of stationery imprinted with the words "United States Navy" and the same logo that's on the front cover.
There are 23 envelopes and the pad looks full. I wonder if a military man wrote one letter to account for a 24th envelope. The envelopes and stationery age darkened. We believe it's a World War II era kit.
The pasteboard box/envelope is printed on the front in red with images of three servicemen, a mailing envelope, stars and a banner that says, "U.S. Service Writing Kit." Someone hand-wrote on the end the words "Navy" and "Blue." There's a blue-printed or stamped "N" on the closure tab.

Vintage 1912 VALET AUTOSTROP RAZOR in Case, Spare Blade - (eBay item 310003479464 end time Dec-06-07 18:30:00 PST) This old razor comes in the original metal case small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Inside the case, the lid says, "Model C Valet AutoStrop Razor, Made in USA." The blade in the razor head has the word "Valet" cut out of the metal. The head says, "Valet AutoStrop Razor, Patented April 9, 1912, Other Patents Pending. AutoStrop Razor Co., New York, U.S.A."
I thought it was dangerous to use because the blade just laid on the head and would flip back. Turns out it locks in place when you pull back the little tab around the hole you screw the handle into. Phew!
The spare blade doesn't have the cut-out Valet word. It's wrapped in an ancient, torn version of waxed paper and lays in an engraved gold-color metal sleeve that has room for many more blades. The handle is solid, tipped with the screw threads for joining to the head and has gripper texture engraved in the handle ridges.
There's a bit of rust in the blue velvet case lining and some of the silver gilt words have rubbed off. The metal outside finish is very worn with much rust on the bottom. It snaps closed with a satisfying sound and feel.

Vintage Charles The Great Commodores CIGAR BOX Havanas! - (eBay item 310002949696 end time Dec-05-07 18:15:00 PST) This one shows a drawing of a three-story factory on the lid and says, "Product of Charles the Great Factory, Havana Wrapper, Havana Filler, Salvador Rodriguez, Inc., Commodores." The box ends says, "Charles the Great Factory Commodores." Inside the lid is the same design as the outer lid. The front is marked, "Commodores" and has the remnants of an engraved paper tax stamp on it that still shows an "S" and "50."
The box bottom has a printed and embossed seal that says, "City of Tampa Florida, Mascotte, Organized July 15 1887" and has an image of a sailing ship in the center. There's more writing: "Seal of the City of Tampa, Fla., Used by Special Permission of the Tampa City Council, (signed) 'Jus. M. Henderson, City Clerk', Fact. No. 409, Coll. Dist. Fla. 50.
There are two rectangles on the bottom. The big one has "Fact. No. 409 District of Florida" and a small print Notice that the cigar makers have complied with all regulations, etc. The other one says, "The Cigars herein contained were manufactured to retail at not more than Five Cents each and are so tax-paid." Between those rectangles are two blank lines marked Packer and Bander, but no one ever filled in their names. A hand-stamp says, "Claro."
I don't know the age of this box, but it's earlier than 1962 as these were real Havana cigars. The box has dovetail joints on all four corners and the bottom is attached with six nails. The hinges are good. There's no hint of tobacco smell, in fact, no smell at all.

Peach Granny Square CROCHET COVERLET Hand Made Afghan! - (eBay item 310002085911 end time Dec-02-07 17:58:04 PST) Here's a hand-made crochet coverlet with peach (or light orange) and blue 100% polyester yarn made by my friend who crochets about 60 mph. She usually makes coverlets from whatever yarn colors she has on hand. This small blanket, large afghan, throw or lap robe is shown on a single bed.
The design is a center panel of eighteen peach granny squares with blue flower centers surrounded by borders of peach, blue and white. It's a sweet, homey item to warm up your decor and snuggle up in for a nap or TV watching.
It's made of polyester worsted-weight yarn and is machine washable.
The photos make it look more orange and less pink than it is in real life. I couldn't get the color balance right.
Can you imagine this bit of hand-crocheted warmth in your home?

Antique 1880 McGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC THIRD READER Textbook! - (eBay item 310001561230 end time Nov-30-07 20:53:44 PST) This old book has no date, but compared to other vintage books we own, this looks to us like it was published in 1880 or earlier.
The title page says, "Eclectic Educational Series. McGuffey's Newly Revised Eclectic Third Reader, Containing Selections in Prose and Poetry, with Rules for Reading; and Exercises in Articulation, Defining, Etc. Revised and Improved, By Wm. H. McGuffey, L.L. D., Revised Stereotype Edition, New York: Clark, Austin & Smith, Cincinnati: W.B. Smith & Co."
The front and back endpapers all bear many handwritten signatures in ink or pencil saying, "Mary A. Evans" or "Mrs. Mary A. Evans." Perhaps she was the teacher? Her handwriting changed a bit as though she had this book for years and years.
While the spine is still tight, all the pages are heavily speckled, the book is worn and soiled, the hinges are starting to split and the cover paper is missing here and there. The top and bottom of the spine cover is missing so the page signatures are exposed. Some pages are shorter than the rest (see photos).
The back cover lists sixteen other titles in the series. There are a few engraved illustrations like the one shown.

Vintage ARTCRAFT 12 K GOLD EYE GLASSES Wire Frame, Case - (eBay item 310001546240 end time Nov-30-07 19:27:50 PST) This pair of gold eye glasses feature semi-round lenses and flexible wire temples that wrap around your ears. Engraved on the bridge of the glasses is "Artcraft 1/10 12 K GF Ful-Vue." They come in a hard leather case marked, "Dr. C. B. O'Neill, Optometrist, Clymer, PA."
The lenses are scratched all over and scuffed down the centers. The temples are green where the temples start curving around the ears. There aren't really nose pads, just a wider area of frame where they rest on your nose.
The coolest thing about this style of eye glass temples is the way the glasses stay on your head even if you turn upside-down. If you're sick of your spectacles falling off, these are for you.

Vintage McCormick BANQUET TEA TIN LITHO BOX Graphics! - (eBay item 310001532719 end time Nov-30-07 18:16:25 PST) This old box has a teapot graphic on the lid. Three sides say, "Individual Banquet Orange Pekoe Extra Fancy Tea, McCormick & Co., Importers and Packers of Tea, Baltimore, Md., 100 Tea Bags."
The front and back have a candelabra Trade Mark in the bottom corners. One side gives directions for brewing tea in four languages: English, Italian, French and Russian.
It's very age-darkened except for part of the front where I started cleaning it with a rag moistened with alcohol. Oops, big mistake. The old color started to melt and smear while wet. The underside has considerable rust with some spots showing inside.

Vintage FIDDLESTIX Game Pick Up Sticks Tube, Directions - (eBay item 310000742955 end time Nov-27-07 21:23:19 PST) This old game of pick up sticks says, "Let's Play Fiddlestix, an Exciting, Fascinating, Tantalizing Game. Plaza Mfg., Co., New York, N.Y. Made in U.S.A." I see no date, but to me the graphics suggest this game came out in the forties at the latest.
The original direction sheet is inside and gives the values of the different color sticks. There are supposed to be ten maroon (they look red to me) sticks, but there are only five. The sticks look somewhat soiled where they're unpainted.
The back shows the techniques for picking up sticks. Did you know you can use the lone purple stick as a tool to remove others? I guess I never had directions for this game in my life.

Vintage Belt Hung COIN CHANGER Vender Dispenser 4 Coins - (eBay item 310000733998 end time Nov-27-07 20:16:13 PST) This vintage belt-hung coin changer has no maker's mark anywhere. It dispenses dimes, quarters, nickels and pennies at the press of a lever, delivering the coin into your hand quick as a wink.
There is a hook on each end to hand it on your belt or waistband. It has a bit of light rust here and there, the worst being on the ring that spits out pennies. It might like a bit of oil, especially on the rings that spits out quarters and nickels.
