Vintage Navy WWII U.S. SERVICE WRITING KIT in Orig Box! - (eBay item 310003746161 end time Dec-07-07 18:15:00 PST)
This U.S. Service Writing Kit is a navy blue faux leather paper folder with a silver embossed logo on the front cover. Inside on the left is a pocket full of envelopes with a place to put your sweetheart's photo and your name, number, outfit, company, camp and location. On the right is a pad of stationery imprinted with the words "United States Navy" and the same logo that's on the front cover.
There are 23 envelopes and the pad looks full. I wonder if a military man wrote one letter to account for a 24th envelope. The envelopes and stationery age darkened. We believe it's a World War II era kit.
The pasteboard box/envelope is printed on the front in red with images of three servicemen, a mailing envelope, stars and a banner that says, "U.S. Service Writing Kit." Someone hand-wrote on the end the words "Navy" and "Blue." There's a blue-printed or stamped "N" on the closure tab.

Vintage 1912 VALET AUTOSTROP RAZOR in Case, Spare Blade - (eBay item 310003479464 end time Dec-06-07 18:30:00 PST)
This old razor comes in the original metal case small enough to fit in the palm of your hand. Inside the case, the lid says, "Model C Valet AutoStrop Razor, Made in USA." The blade in the razor head has the word "Valet" cut out of the metal. The head says, "Valet AutoStrop Razor, Patented April 9, 1912, Other Patents Pending. AutoStrop Razor Co., New York, U.S.A."
I thought it was dangerous to use because the blade just laid on the head and would flip back. Turns out it locks in place when you pull back the little tab around the hole you screw the handle into. Phew!
The spare blade doesn't have the cut-out Valet word. It's wrapped in an ancient, torn version of waxed paper and lays in an engraved gold-color metal sleeve that has room for many more blades. The handle is solid, tipped with the screw threads for joining to the head and has gripper texture engraved in the handle ridges.
There's a bit of rust in the blue velvet case lining and some of the silver gilt words have rubbed off. The metal outside finish is very worn with much rust on the bottom. It snaps closed with a satisfying sound and feel.

Vintage Charles The Great Commodores CIGAR BOX Havanas! - (eBay item 310002949696 end time Dec-05-07 18:15:00 PST)
This one shows a drawing of a three-story factory on the lid and says, "Product of Charles the Great Factory, Havana Wrapper, Havana Filler, Salvador Rodriguez, Inc., Commodores." The box ends says, "Charles the Great Factory Commodores." Inside the lid is the same design as the outer lid. The front is marked, "Commodores" and has the remnants of an engraved paper tax stamp on it that still shows an "S" and "50."
The box bottom has a printed and embossed seal that says, "City of Tampa Florida, Mascotte, Organized July 15 1887" and has an image of a sailing ship in the center. There's more writing: "Seal of the City of Tampa, Fla., Used by Special Permission of the Tampa City Council, (signed) 'Jus. M. Henderson, City Clerk', Fact. No. 409, Coll. Dist. Fla. 50.
There are two rectangles on the bottom. The big one has "Fact. No. 409 District of Florida" and a small print Notice that the cigar makers have complied with all regulations, etc. The other one says, "The Cigars herein contained were manufactured to retail at not more than Five Cents each and are so tax-paid." Between those rectangles are two blank lines marked Packer and Bander, but no one ever filled in their names. A hand-stamp says, "Claro."
I don't know the age of this box, but it's earlier than 1962 as these were real Havana cigars. The box has dovetail joints on all four corners and the bottom is attached with six nails. The hinges are good. There's no hint of tobacco smell, in fact, no smell at all.

Peach Granny Square CROCHET COVERLET Hand Made Afghan! - (eBay item 310002085911 end time Dec-02-07 17:58:04 PST)
Here's a hand-made crochet coverlet with peach (or light orange) and blue 100% polyester yarn made by my friend who crochets about 60 mph. She usually makes coverlets from whatever yarn colors she has on hand. This small blanket, large afghan, throw or lap robe is shown on a single bed.
The design is a center panel of eighteen peach granny squares with blue flower centers surrounded by borders of peach, blue and white. It's a sweet, homey item to warm up your decor and snuggle up in for a nap or TV watching.
It's made of polyester worsted-weight yarn and is machine washable.
The photos make it look more orange and less pink than it is in real life. I couldn't get the color balance right.
Can you imagine this bit of hand-crocheted warmth in your home?

Antique 1880 McGUFFEY'S ECLECTIC THIRD READER Textbook! - (eBay item 310001561230 end time Nov-30-07 20:53:44 PST)
This old book has no date, but compared to other vintage books we own, this looks to us like it was published in 1880 or earlier.
The title page says, "Eclectic Educational Series. McGuffey's Newly Revised Eclectic Third Reader, Containing Selections in Prose and Poetry, with Rules for Reading; and Exercises in Articulation, Defining, Etc. Revised and Improved, By Wm. H. McGuffey, L.L. D., Revised Stereotype Edition, New York: Clark, Austin & Smith, Cincinnati: W.B. Smith & Co."
The front and back endpapers all bear many handwritten signatures in ink or pencil saying, "Mary A. Evans" or "Mrs. Mary A. Evans." Perhaps she was the teacher? Her handwriting changed a bit as though she had this book for years and years.
While the spine is still tight, all the pages are heavily speckled, the book is worn and soiled, the hinges are starting to split and the cover paper is missing here and there. The top and bottom of the spine cover is missing so the page signatures are exposed. Some pages are shorter than the rest (see photos).
The back cover lists sixteen other titles in the series. There are a few engraved illustrations like the one shown.

Vintage ARTCRAFT 12 K GOLD EYE GLASSES Wire Frame, Case - (eBay item 310001546240 end time Nov-30-07 19:27:50 PST)
This pair of gold eye glasses feature semi-round lenses and flexible wire temples that wrap around your ears. Engraved on the bridge of the glasses is "Artcraft 1/10 12 K GF Ful-Vue." They come in a hard leather case marked, "Dr. C. B. O'Neill, Optometrist, Clymer, PA."
The lenses are scratched all over and scuffed down the centers. The temples are green where the temples start curving around the ears. There aren't really nose pads, just a wider area of frame where they rest on your nose.
The coolest thing about this style of eye glass temples is the way the glasses stay on your head even if you turn upside-down. If you're sick of your spectacles falling off, these are for you.

Vintage McCormick BANQUET TEA TIN LITHO BOX Graphics! - (eBay item 310001532719 end time Nov-30-07 18:16:25 PST)
This old box has a teapot graphic on the lid. Three sides say, "Individual Banquet Orange Pekoe Extra Fancy Tea, McCormick & Co., Importers and Packers of Tea, Baltimore, Md., 100 Tea Bags."
The front and back have a candelabra Trade Mark in the bottom corners. One side gives directions for brewing tea in four languages: English, Italian, French and Russian.
It's very age-darkened except for part of the front where I started cleaning it with a rag moistened with alcohol. Oops, big mistake. The old color started to melt and smear while wet. The underside has considerable rust with some spots showing inside.

Vintage FIDDLESTIX Game Pick Up Sticks Tube, Directions - (eBay item 310000742955 end time Nov-27-07 21:23:19 PST)
This old game of pick up sticks says, "Let's Play Fiddlestix, an Exciting, Fascinating, Tantalizing Game. Plaza Mfg., Co., New York, N.Y. Made in U.S.A." I see no date, but to me the graphics suggest this game came out in the forties at the latest.
The original direction sheet is inside and gives the values of the different color sticks. There are supposed to be ten maroon (they look red to me) sticks, but there are only five. The sticks look somewhat soiled where they're unpainted.
The back shows the techniques for picking up sticks. Did you know you can use the lone purple stick as a tool to remove others? I guess I never had directions for this game in my life.

Vintage Belt Hung COIN CHANGER Vender Dispenser 4 Coins - (eBay item 310000733998 end time Nov-27-07 20:16:13 PST)
This vintage belt-hung coin changer has no maker's mark anywhere. It dispenses dimes, quarters, nickels and pennies at the press of a lever, delivering the coin into your hand quick as a wink.
There is a hook on each end to hand it on your belt or waistband. It has a bit of light rust here and there, the worst being on the ring that spits out pennies. It might like a bit of oil, especially on the rings that spits out quarters and nickels.

1873 LEMON PRESS Juicer Crusher Squeezer Strainer Screw - (eBay item 290183806505 end time Nov-26-07 21:39:22 PST)
This antique kitchen tool is a lemon press, fruit press, crusher or juicer. It doesn't say what it is. It's marked on the bottom, "Patent on Cup and Plunger Applied For." On the plunger it says, "Pat'd. Aug. 12, 1873."
The cup part stands about 4 1/2" high, so it was for straining or pressing the juice out of a small amount of fruit--enough for a drink, perhaps. Maybe for making lemonade.
The center crank turns easily to force the plunger bottom down onto the fruit and crush it. It can be disassembled into three parts for cleaning. The top crusher handle is metal, the side handle is wooden. The base and crusher bottom are very heavy. The mesh cup is very light.

Antique STAR TUFTING EMBROIDERY MACHINE 1892 Tool, Box! - (eBay item 290182932108 end time Nov-24-07 20:44:07 PST)
This vintage hand tool is marked, "The Star Mfg. Co. Limited, Washington, PA. Pat. Feb. 2, 92." That's 1892! The instructions are very brittle and fell apart even more after photographing, so we'll provide a photocopy you can read without worry.
The instructions claim this tool is so easy to use any ten-year-old can manage it.- With canvas or jute from coffee sacks, load needle with rag strips or yarn and create rugs.
- A pair of driving mittens uses Java canvass or soft crash toweling and Germantown yarn worked two or three strands together.
- Ladies or children's mittens can be made on unbleached muslin or Java canvas with soft Saxony, Germantown or zephyr yarn, clipped or not.
- Lab robes worked in good yarn can wear for years.
- Fancy work uses zephyrs, silks, worsteds, tinsel, etc., for raised and flat embroidery to create stand scarfs, lounge pillows, instrument covers, stool covers, lambrequins, screens, curtains, slippers, cushions, pillow shams, banners, tidies, robes for baby carriages, paper-holders, toilet sets, card, handkerchief and slipper holders, dresser covers, mantle covers, etc.
It looks like printed fabric patterns cost $1.00 and something was $4.50--maybe the machine? (That bit of paper is missing.) I don't see what the little star shapes are for.

This vintage box contains 3 of the original 4 sandwich cutters: the diamond, heart and oval. The circle shape is missing. The box says, "Sandwich-Cutters, Stainless Steel, Made in Sweden, No. R 140, Rostfritt stâl, Sandwichmått."
I don't know exactly when these were manufactured, but the box bears a Kaufmann's price sticker for 59 cents.
They're well made with rolled top edges, still sturdy, shiny and bright. Are you ready to make some fancy sandwiches?

Vintage SPIRATONE PROXISCOPE Macro Focus Geared Rail! - (eBay item 290182888437 end time Nov-24-07 19:00:00 PST)
This vintage Proxiscope from Spiratone comes with the original shipping box and all the literature. The sheet titled How to Use the Proxiscope says,
The Proxiscope is a geared rail device which can be attached to virtually any tripod or copying stand and in turn mounts to any camera. Its basic purpose is to make possible vertical or horizontal camera movement within a 5 1/2" range. The type of movement provided by the Proxiscope is primarily useful in closeup photography.
Screw the camera into either stud of the two camera mounting platforms at the end of the Proxiscope. To tighten camera in position, turn knurled chrome screw or rubber covered platform, depending on which mounting position you have selected. The choice of the two camera mounting platforms permits you to place the camera so it will face vertically or horizontally.
On the extension part of the large transport wheel are two tripod sockets, at right angles to each other. The Proxiscope is mounted onto the tripod or copying stand through either of these sockets depending on whether a vertical or horizontal position of the camera is desired...
There's more, but I won't type it all. They end by saying how extremely versatile the tool is and it might become a steady companion to your camera.
Made in Japan, this Proxiscope SR looks as good as the day it was manufactured long ago. The rail grooves are crisp and sharp, no wear.
One paper dates this item at 1961 and the price was $9.95 or $11.88, depending on if this was Series V or Series VI. The Homestead, PA owner overpaid by 20 cents according to a card. Also included is Vol. 1, No. 1, February-March 1961 issue of Spiratone News and Views with lots of tips on buying film, lens elements, gadget bags and books.

Vintage OLD MAID CARD GAME Great Graphics Box 1920-30! - (eBay item 290182831498 end time Nov-24-07 18:30:00 PST)
This Old Maid Card Game is very old. Just look at the old-fashioned graphics on the box and the character cards. They could be from the twenties or thirties. The box says, "Made in U.S.A., 4115, Milton Bradley Co., Springfield, Mass. U.S.A."
I have no idea why the box is so big. All 35 cards plus the directions card are in it with tons of room to spare. The art on the box and the art on the cards don't match. Two different artists did the work. Perhaps these cards weren't the ones originally in this box.
The 17 pairs of cards are:- 1 Milkman
- 2 Grocer
- 3 Postman
- 4 Gardner
- 5 Doctor Busby
- 6 Policeman
- 7 Banker
- 8 Coalman
- 9 Iceman
- 10 Lawyer
- 11 Milkman's Son
- 12 Grocer's Son
- 13 Gardner's Son
- 14 Iceman's Son
- 15 Policeman's Son
- 16 Lawyer's Son
- 17 Coalman's Son
Plus the Old Maid and the Directions card.
The cards are lightly soiled, softened with use and have some creases. The Old Maid card has fared the worst, the poor dear. She's much dirtier and more creased than any other card. I love the graphics on the box.

Vintage OCARINA "SWEET POTATO" Musical Instrument, Box! - (eBay item 290182582620 end time Nov-23-07 20:38:34 PST)
This key of E ocarina or "sweet potato" musical instrument in original box was manufactured by the toy division of The Waterbury Button Company, Waterbury, Conn., U.S.A. The box says, "Easy to Play. This genuine Waterbury Ocarina produces a rich, flute-like music. Accurately made of durable, sanitary plastics for perfect tone...easy to play."
It also says the playing instruction are in the box, but they're long gone as is one end of the box. It says, "Start Your Own "Sweet Potato" Band. After you learn to play the Ocarina, teach your friends and form your own Ocarina Band. Ocarinas are featured in the movies, on the radio and by leading orchestras."
The metal reed has some patina, otherwise the ocarina looks like new. The original box has great fifties vintage graphics.

Vintage "LITTLE SQUIRT" Naked Boy Liquor Dispenser, Box - (eBay item 290182569241 end time Nov-23-07 19:33:20 PST)
This naked boy stands ready to serve your liquor his own special way. Made of metal, he comes in the original box with two lengths of tubing. The instructions are gone.
One end of the box says, "Manufactured by Emile Liebert, Inc., Los Angeles, California." The other end says, "The Little Squirt Dist. Co., Inc., 1640 1/2 North Vine Street, Hollywood 28, Calif."
He's so old the rubber you stick the tubing into has gone hard and brittle. I don't know if you could pop a cork in there instead of the rubber or do something with silicone to make him work. You could still display him atop a bottle on your bar.

Vintage IDEAL WIRE STRIPPER 22 20 18 16 14 Gauge Blade! - (eBay item 290182077646 end time Nov-22-07 19:00:00 PST)
This old tool confused me at first, so I took a million photos. It's an Ideal wire stripper. The handles are marked, "Ideal, Sycamore, Illinois, Patent Pending."
The photos provide an instruction course in how to use the thing--good if you've never spied a pair, boring if you knew what this tool was on sight.
The cutting blade is marked, "22, 20, 18, 16, 14" above the various size holes, indicating where to place your gauge of wire you're stripping. It's great fun to work because a light squeeze closes the gripper and blade, a hard squeeze spreads the jaws apart and letting go closes it up with a big clack!
Too much information for guys in the know, but I'm a girl, so there.

2 Vintage Cast Iron Wood-Burning STOVE LID LIFTERS Tool - (eBay item 290181289827 end time Nov-20-07 18:15:00 PST)
These two old tools were used to lift the lids on old wood-burning cook stoves. The short one is marked "4" on the bottom of the tip. The one with the mesh handle is marked "00" on the handle and might have said something more, but it's obliterated by rust.
Can you imagine the clanking sound of shifting a stove lid out of the way to check the fire? Can you hear the roar or hiss of the flames? What was cooking? Eggs? Beans? Meat? Or maybe someone's warming his sock feet on the rail of a pot belly stove.
You don't need the actual two-ton stove for such memories. Just hang these old cast iron lid lifters on your wall.

Opening paragraph: Seeing as how good you've been to us--
I just forget which one of us it was that first sprung the idea, but one time a while ago when we were all sitting around after one of Ma Wilken's crackerjack suppers, one of us pops up sudden like and says look here everybody--seeing folks are finding The Wilken Family Blended Whiskey so much to their liking, what if ever they were to get a taste of our Family's home cooking recipes--wouldn't they just love these real old-fashioned country dishes we're always hollering for Ma and Mary to make!
So right then and there we set to getting up this here book by way of showing you the Wilkens are good neighbors, too.
Harry E. Wilken, Sr.
Here's a sample recipe:
MOTHER'S COLE SLAW
1 head cabbage
I cup sugar
1 teaspoon mustard
1/2 teaspoon salt
pepper
2 eggs
1 cup top milk
1 cup vinegar
Cut cabbage in quarters and soak in cold water until crisp. Drain and shred fine. Mix sugar, mustard, salt and dash of pepper. Add eggs and mix well, then add milk. Add vinegar slowly and cook over a low heat, stirring all the while, until thickened. Chill. Pour over the cabbage and serve.
This recipe has been in our family for eighty years, passing from generation to generation.

1998 Play-by-Play Giveaway Plush COCA-COLA BEAR Coke! - (eBay item 290178582394 end time Nov-12-07 18:06:07 PST)
This eight-inch tall Coca-Cola polar bear is wearing a red sports jersey and holding a bottle of Coke. He's new with tags, even though he came out in 1998.
The front of the hangtag says, "Always Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola® Brand Plush Collection." The back says, "Not for Retail Sale. Coca-Cola® and Coke® brand plush is produced under the authority of The Coca-Cola Company, owner of the trademarks Coca-Cola, Coke, Always Coca-Cola Polar Bear, the design of the Coca-Cola Seal and the design of the contour bottle. ®The Coca-Cola Company, All Rights Reserved. Distributed by Play-by-Play Toys & Novelties, San Antonio, Texas 78218. Not recommended for children under 3 years of age. Caution: Remove all plastic fasteners and hangtags before giving to child. Made and Printed in China."
The butt tags say, "Coca-Cola® brand Plush Collection. All new material. Contents: polyester fibers." It repeats much of the info on the hangtag, then another tag says, "Not to be removed until delivered to the consumer," and repeats contents info.
I just love his face.

JUMBO MICKEY Cloth Doll Fisher-Price Mattel Disney 2000 - (eBay item 290178578581 end time Nov-12-07 17:55:46 PST)
This jumbo Mickey doll is 25" tall--not that he'll stand up. He prefers sitting. He's wearing a red tee marked "M" and "Mickey" on the chest, with tan cargo pants and blue and white sneakers. His tail comes out through a slot in his pants.
The tag says, "Fisher-Price, Inc., New York, New York 10010 U.S.A. Made in China ©2000 Mattel, Inc., © Disney, Ohio Reg. No.: PA 274."
The other side of the tag says, "94669/94672 Asst. Jumbo Mickey, Surface Washable Only, Filling: All New Materials: Polyester Fiber, Plastic Stiffener." A number is stamped on it: "198IEL."
When I took the photos, he had a small mark on the left side of his nose, and his white gloves were a mite gray. They cleaned up pretty well with a damp cloth, so he's looking more spiffy now.
